Functional Non-target Differences between Bt and Conventional Cotton

چکیده

A five-year field study was conducted in Arizona to assess the long term impact of transgenic cotton expressing the Cry1Ac dð-endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) on population densities of 22 taxa of foliar-dwelling arthropod natural enemies and on the effect of the natural enemy community on key pests in the system. Multi-year analyses of arthropod abundance revealed small, but statistically significant, reductions in five common arthropod predator taxa in unsprayed Bt compared with unsprayed non-Bt cotton. In contrast, the use of conventional insecticides led to large reductions in 13 predator taxa. Furthermore, functional studies conducted over a three-year period indicated that the small reductions in abundance observed in Bt cotton may have little ecological meaning. Sentinel eggs and pupae of P. gossypiella experienced the same rates of mortality, primarily from predation, in both Bt and non-Bt cotton and cohort-based life tables for B. tabaci demonstrated that rates of sucking predation, parasitism and dislodgement (chewing predation in part) were unchanged between Bt and non-Bt cotton. Results demonstrate that long-term and multi-factor studies are required to examine meaningful non-target effects in the field.

Effects of repeated cultivation of transgenic Bt cotton on functional bacterial populations in rhizosphere soil

The impact of multiple-year (0–5 years) cultivation of transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton on the functional bacterial populations in rhizosphere soil was investigated. The transgenic Bt ? CpTI cotton line SGK321 and a non-Bt cotton line Shiyuan321 were planted in four fields in which Bt cotton had been continuously cultivated for 0, 1, 3, and 5 years. Rhizosphere soil samples were co...

Bt Crop Effects on Functional Guilds of Non-Target Arthropods: A Meta-Analysis

BACKGROUND Uncertainty persists over the environmental effects of genetically-engineered crops that produce the insecticidal Cry proteins of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). We performed meta-analyses on a modified public database to synthesize current knowledge about the effects of Bt cotton, maize and potato on the abundance and interactions of arthropod non-target functional guilds. METHODOLOG...

Competitive release and outbreaks of non-target pests associated with transgenic Bt cotton.

The adoption of transgenic Bt cotton has, in some cases, led to environmental and economic benefits through reduced insecticide use. However, the distribution of these benefits and associated risks among cotton growers and cotton-growing regions has been uneven due in part to outbreaks of non-target or secondary pests, thereby requiring the continued use of synthetic insecticides. In the southe...

Transgenic Bt Cotton Does Not Disrupt the Top-Down Forces Regulating the Cotton Aphid in Central China

Top-down force is referred to arthropod pest management delivered by the organisms from higher trophic levels. In the context of prevalent adoption of transgenic Bt crops that produce insecticidal Cry proteins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), it still remains elusive whether the top-down forces are affected by the insect-resistant traits that introduced into the Bt crops. We explored h...

Determination of genetic uniformity in transgenic cotton plants using DNA markers (RAPD and ISSR) and SDS-PAGE

One concern about using transgenic plants is the genetic variation that occurred from theirs tissue culture and regeneration. Molecular markers are an important element for efficient and effective determination of genetic variation. The present work was carried out to assess the genetic uniformity of transgenic cottons (Bt and chitinase lines), using RAPD, ISSR molecular markers and SDS-PAGE an...
